Orlando City projected starting XI versus Harrisburg City Islanders | USL PRO Playoffs

A brand new season starts on Saturday night for Orlando City SC. OCSC now have three games to go before they can lift the USL PRO championship for the second consecutive time but nothing is guaranteed, especially when they welcome the Harrisburg City Islanders to the ESPN Wide World of Sports for first-round playoff action tonight (WATCH HERE). 

Orlando City head coach Adrian Heath has made it a norm throughout the regular season by running a 4-2-3-1 formation, and that isn’t expected to change on Saturday except for players filling in the positions. 

Darwin Ceren will miss Saturday’s match after still being on international duty with El Salvador, meaning the holding midfield position will more than likely go to a player who has been on form. Defender Rafael Ramos picked up a knock earlier this week at practice, and didn’t train with the team on their last training session on Thursday. 

Tyler Turner (quad) did, however, practice with the Lions and left Heath with the decision to come toward game time. 

One veteran player that will not suit up for OCSC is goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo. The veteran goalkeeper missed out on the last four games for Orlando City after Carl Woszczynski displayed a superb performance along with a plethora of saves that helped Orlando City navigate to a third USL PRO Commissioner's Cup.

Orlando City Notes: Heath talks playoffs; Woszczynski gets nod as starting goalkeeper; updates on international players and injuries

SANFORD, Fla. — The last time Orlando City Soccer Club went into the USL PRO playoffs as regular season champions?

2012. A year head coach Adrian Heath will always remember simply because it resulted into a shocking first-round defeat for the Lions. Heath isn’t, or letting, the past dictate Saturday’s performance when Orlando City welcomes the Harrisburg City Islanders, but constantly pinpoints back to 2012 as a lesson in defeat. 

“We didn’t approach the game and we didn’t start well, but that’s what happens when you don’t prepare properly,” Heath said on the 2012 playoff loss. “All we can do is prepare properly. That’s the message we’ve been banging home. I expect no difference on Saturday.” 

Orlando City and Harrisburg split the season series even, with both sides each having a victory both times they met. Orlando City, who have been unbeaten at home all season, have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, which is something Heath said is key heading into the postseason. 

“We’ve worked hard to get home field advantage,” Heath said. “There’s no need to throw it away. I have much faith in this group that when we do play well, we have the tools to win the game. Now we want to win the game and go on the next stage of the playoffs.

Woszczynski receives nod to be starting goalkeeper against Harrisburg

After starting the last three matches for Orlando City, Heath looks to continue starting goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski in the playoffs.

“He [Woszczynski] will start the game on Saturday,” Heath confirmed with the OSJ. 

Despite only making four appearances this season, Woszczynski has allowed one goal while recording two shutouts behind his 10 saves in 2014. 

Ceren still on international duty, likely to miss first round

In the midst of the Copa CentroAmericana, Orlando City’s Darwin Ceren will miss Saturday’s encounter vs. Harrisburg after the El Salvador national team clinched a third place matchup against Panama. 

“I think Darwin is back next week,” said Heath. “We have an arrangement that he comes back next week. I’m pleased for him, I don’t stop anybody from going to the national team because I think it’s important.”

Despite Los Guanacos already earning a 2015 Gold Cup berth, Heath expects Ceren to be back after the first round, that’s if Orlando City makes it past Harrisburg City. 

Orlando City Injury updates

With a deadly attack that has scored a combined 56 goals (most all season) in the regular season, OCSC are entering the playoffs with all three of their available strikers injury-free. 

Dennis Chin, Giuseppe Gentile and Corey Hertzog all trained with the team on Thursday morning, leaving Heath plenty of options to work with come game day. 

Hertzog recently came back from a hamstring injury, while Chin also suffered earlier in season with his hamstring. Gentile, who’s been on form as of recent, might start up front against Harrisburg after previous games showed his partnership with Kevin Molino worked wonders in Orlando’s final third. 

The only player that may not see any action on Saturday is defender Rafael Ramos, who picked up a knock earlier this week and practiced apart from the team on Thursday. Heath told the OSJ that he’s ‘50/50’ while refusing to place a timetable on his return. 

Despite only playing four games this season, the former Benfica man is eligible for the USL PRO postseason given the five-games played rule applies only to players who are on loan from MLS teams. Therefore, midfielder Ian Christianson, on loan from New York Red Bulls, is ruled out for the remainder of the USL playoffs after only making three appearances for Orlando. 

Tyler Turner, who suffered a quad injury and pulled out of the United States U-20 men's national team, trained with the team on Thursday, and could be a game-time decision after missing the last two weeks of the regular season. 

Kevin Molino caps scoring record at 20 goals, as Orlando City defeat Richmond Kickers

LAKE BUENA VISTA — Same guy, different game. 

Kevin Molino scored his 20th goal of the season, as Orlando City Soccer Club defeated the Richmond Kickers 1-0 on Saturday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, in front of 4,400 fans in attendance. 

“I honestly think he’s [Molino] one of the most talented footballers in America,” said Heath. “He’s demonstrated that he’s more than capable of moving to the next level. It’s been a great year at home. Winning becomes a habit, it’s not easy to do.”

The Trinidad and Tobago international scored in the 23rd minute after defender Luke Boden’s cross found the midfielder, who headed the ball past Richmond goalkeeper Ryan Taylor. 

OCSC outshot the Kickers 15-5, with the first half being the busiest halve for the Lions as they outshot Richmond 9-2 with Carl Woszczynski as the starting goalkeeper for Orlando for the second consecutive time at home. 

With the USL PRO regular season now over with, Orlando finishes in first place with 62 points (19-4-5), while also being Invictus at home. 

Orlando City now secures home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, starting their postseason run on Saturday, September 13 where they will either play the Rochester Rhinos or Harrisburg City Islanders. 

Molino scores hat-trick, Orlando City thrash Dayton Dutch Lions

LAKE BUENA VISTA — There’s no stopping Kevin Molino - Not even the Dutch Lions. 

Molino recorded his second hat-trick of the season, as Orlando City SC defeated the Dayton Dutch Lions 7-0 on Sunday evening at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. 

“All the goals were important tonight,”said Orlando City head coach Adrian Heath. “The kid (Molino) is putting goals to his game now. The only thing lacking in his game is not scoring enough goals. He’s changed so much since he’s been with us, now he’s scoring goals.”

The Trinidad and Tobago international wasted no time in putting OCSC in front, scoring six minutes into the game after forward Giuseppe Gentile found the midfielder to strike the ball past Matt Williams. Gentile would get on the scoresheet to double the lead in the 37th minute before Molino scored his second moments later after a defensive error lead to Molino striking the ball from close range into the net. 

Heath opted to have a different lineup compared to his previous one last Thursday, which saw the Lions fall on the road. That wouldn’t matter, as a combo-play between Gentile and Molino found Austin da Luz to make it 4-0 in the 47th minute. Molino capped his hat-trick in the 57th minute after Gentile’s shot deflected off Dayton’s goalkeeper, finding Molino to strike past Williams. 

“We want to win the regular season,” added Heath. “We put ourselves in a good opportunity to win the regular season, which to me is really important.” 

Molino leads USL PRO in the Golden Boot with 19 goals (record), while Orlando City extending their unbeaten run at home to 16 games. OCSC will travel to Legion Stadium on Wednesday to rematch the Wilmington Hammerheads. 

Orlando City could clinch the regular season on Wednesday with a win over the Hammerheads before returning for their last match of the season when they host the Richmond Kickers on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. 

Orlando City back to winning ways, Molino ties single-season league scoring record

LAKE BUENA VISTA — Darwin Ceren scored a brace while Kevin Molino tied a single-season league scoring record, as Orlando City Soccer Club defeated Harrisburg City Islanders 3-1 on Saturday night, in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,029 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. 

“Goals change games,” said Orlando City head coach Adrian Heath. “I thought the lads were focused. They worked really hard this week, and we aren’t used to losing. Kevin (Molino) is starting to do what we’re asking. He’s having a great year in front of goal.” 

After Robbie Derschang scored the opening goal for Harrisburg in the first five minutes, Ceren leveled the game moments later when a free-kick from distance curled into the net. Orlando City took the lead in the 19th minute when Molino’s close-range header drove past goalkeeper Nicholas Noble. 

Ceren capped the game in the 88th minute after a counter-attack lead to the El Salvadoran international to produce a moment of magic when he dribbled past the Harrisburg defensive line, slotting the ball past Noble for the goal. 

Orlando City will now go on a two-game road stretch where they will meet the Charlotte Eagles on August 20, before going into City Stadium to battle the Richmond Kickers three days later. 

Orlando City cruise past LA Galaxy II

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Hertzog scores twice and Orlando City witness a Sweet 16 unbeaten streak come alive.  

Corey Hertzog bagged a brace while Kevin Molino sealed the deal, as Orlando City SC clinched a 3-0 victory over visiting LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in front of 5,029 fans. 

“We’ve been a working progress, and it’s getting better,” OCSC head coach Adrian Heath said. “We try to impose our style of play to our opposition. Overall, we were a good value to the scoreline and it should of been more.”

Luke Boden helped set up the opening goal in the 17th minute, finding Hertzog who slotted in a cross past Los Dos goalkeeper Cody Laurendi. The former NY Red Bull forward secured his brace before halftime after Kevin Molino found him unmarked from close range to double the lead. 

“The first goal was all Bodz (Luke Boden), so all credit to him,” said Hertzog. “Goals bring confidence and you’re a different player when you have a lot of confidence.” 

Molino, who went on to score his league-leading 11th goal, capped the match in the 60th minute after Brian Span’s shot deflected off the post, finding the Trinidad and Tobago international who buried the dead ball into the net. 

Orlando City go back on the road, visiting the Wilmington Hammerheads on Thursday. OCSC will then travel to St. Petersburg to play the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the second leg of the I-4 Derby on Sunday. 

Preview: Orlando City vs. Dayton Dutch Lions

Orlando City SC could go 11 points clear in the USL PRO standings, and set a new club record of 15 matches unbeaten when they visit the Dayton Dutch Lions on Sunday at 3 p.m. (WATCH HERE). 

Orlando and Dayton have yet to meet this season, but last played in a 3-3 draw at Miami Valley (Ohio) on July 2013 which saw OCSC squander their one-goal lead toward the end of the match. 

And while OCSC are riding a 14 match unbeaten streak, within that run the Lions flow a five-game winning streak. Kevin Molino, who leads USL PRO in scoring with nine goals, hasn’t scored in his last three league matches, however, he did score a hat-trick during a 3-1 home victory over the Charlotte Eagles back in May. 

Forward Dennis Chin, who picked up a hamstring injury last month, has since returned to action, playing minimal minutes. Corey Hertzog will more than likely get the nod to start from Adrian Heath after finding his scoring touch after notching two goals in his last three games. 

Although the Dutch Lions aren’t having their best season to date, they do have one of the leagues top scorers in Aaron Schoendeld whose eight goals has him in the fourth spot for the Golden Boot. Dayton currently sit in 13th place in the standings with 11 points, while posting one victory in their last five matches. 

Despite playing last Friday in a 0-0 draw against Brazilian side Sao Paulo FC during an international friendly, Orlando City’s last competitive match resulted into a 5-2 defeat against MLS side Colorado Rapids during U.S. Open Cup play last Tuesday.

Adrian Heath talks Kaka arrival

While much credit can be attributed to owners Flavio Augusto da Silva and Phil Rawlins for luring Brazilian star Ricardo Kaka to Orlando City SC as their first Designated Player, the credit will soon be transported to the man who will be coaching the midfielder. 

That’s Adrian Heath. 

Within the last 48 hours, reports of Kaka signing with Orlando City have coincided with World Cup fever, and Heath for the first time answered questions from reporters about the soon-to-be announced signing. 

“We’re in advanced talks to sign Kaka. We’re all optimistic and really hopeful and probably see a little bit of what it’s like next year,” said Heath. “We’re talking about one of the world’s global names, one the best players in the last 20-30 years. We hope we get it done, we hope this time next year he’s running out in a purple shirt.” 

According to other reports that have surfaced in the last couple days, the former AC Milan ace is expected to go out on loan to Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo FC for the remainder of 2014 to remain fitness. Kaka would eventually join the Lions in January 2015 before the start of MLS preseason camp. 

Sao Paulo, which is Kaka’s boyhood club, ironically played Orlando City on Friday in a scoreless international friendly. 

Hat-trick Molino leads Orlando City to victory, remain undefeated in USL PRO

Kevin Molino’s hat-trick was all Orlando City SC needed, as they defeated the Charlotte Eagles 3-1, on Wednesday night in front of 4,219 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. 

“There was a lot of pleasing stuff,” OCSC head coach Adrian Heath told reporters. “I thought we were very good in periods. We haven’t put a full 90 minutes yet.” 

The Trinidad and Tobago international opened the scoring when Bryan Burkes shot was deflected by Eagles goalkeeper Brock Duckworth, leaving Molino to execute on the rebound in the 10th minute. Molino would score his second goal in the 29th minute. 

“I as a footballer set goals, and my goals was before I go international I want to set 20 points,” said hat-trick hero Molino. “We just want to keep going. We work together as a team. It’s been a hectic month, but we have to keep going.” 

Orlando City’s MLS signee would cap the match and solidify his hat trick in the 76th minute after midfielder Mikey Lopez’s cross found Molino to strike the ball behind the keeper. The Eagles would go on to score a consolation goal three minutes later after Giuseppe Gentile scored after a defensive eror resulted into the Eagles player to put one back behind Miguel Gallardo. 

With the victory, the Lions extend their unbeaten start in USL PRO to 11-games while also sitting in first place, provisionally nine points clear from second place LA Galaxy II.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — After starting their 2014 USL PRO season on the road, which saw Orlando City SC leave with only one point, the Lions are riding high on confidence after their latest road stretch which saw them exit with a perfect six points. 

The last time OCSC went perfect on a road stretch? August of 2012, which was the last time Orlando exited a two-game road trip with six points after victories at Harrisburg City Islanders and Rochester Rhinos. 

“Six points on the road is never easy,” Orlando head coach Adrian Heath told the OSJ on Saturday. “I thought we had good play on the counter-attack in Dallas, and tonight it was just a case in playing the conditions. We have to play the opponent and sometimes you also have to play the conditions.” 

Heath, who is rarely or never keen the performance of the team, had high praise for his men despite the 25 MPH wind gusts that played a heavy factor during their 2-1 win at Oklahoma City.

Darwin Ceren’s absence and return to Orlando City 

There was one notable player missing on Saturday and though the Lions cracked up a win, his alive energy that moves the midfield brought questions on whether the scoreline would of had more than two numbers. 

Orlando’s third Major League Soccer signee Darwin Ceren missed out on Saturday’s match at Oklahoma, and Heath told the OSJ that it was because of a family illness. 

“He’s had a family illness and he had to take care of that,” said Heath. “Everything is okay, and should be in practice on Monday morning and back in the lineup.” 

Unstoppable Molino getting paves the way in road games

It’s no secret that midfielder Kevin Molino is Heath’s favorite player. After all, he’s Orlando’s first-ever MLS signing, and his performance in the last two road games displayed why has potential to be the club’s first-ever captain once the Lions jump into MLS. 

Three goals in two games may seem like just a statistic, an emphatic one, but it was the timing in which they came played a serious factor on the result. The 2012 USL PRO Most Valuable Player made his presence known on Saturday at OKC, pulling the strings after feeding the ball forward Dennis Chin and wingers Brian Span and Adama Mbengue.

Molino also played a role into orchestrating the opening goal. Perhaps the match at FC Dallas last week gave him the momentum going into Saturday’s match, but his form, which is rapidly moving forward, is something that could transform into a threat league-wide.

SANFORD, Fla. — After finishing unbeaten at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic, Orlando City will now shift their focus on the upcoming college friendlies before they kickoff the 2014 USL Pro season. 

“We gave the lads three-four days off, too many of the guys were carrying around knocks, but today’s training was very lively,” head coach Adrian Heath told the OSJ after Wednesday’s practice. “We now have two and half weeks to prepare for the season, and we’ve done a lot of good stuff to prepare.” 

The Lions kickoff their slate of college friendlies when they welcome the Florida International University Panthers to the Seminole Soccer Complex on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Orlando City’s Adrian Heath speaking to Sporting KC this week about on-coming loans

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — With weeks left in preseason, Orlando City SC’s roster looks to increase with a few new players, meaning the Lions will be awaiting on the arrival of the two Sporting Kansas City players that will be loaned to Orlando for the upcoming 2014 USL Pro season. 

“I’m speaking to Peter (Vermes) hopefully on Wednesday this week,” said OCSC head coach Adrian Heath after Saturday’s 4-4 draw vs. New York Red Bulls. “Obviously we got to speak about what we feel our needs are, and what he’s got as well. He has a lot of games coming up with the CONCACAF (Champions League). He’s giving two to Oklahoma (Energy FC) as well, it’ll be interesting.” 

Since affiliating with the MLS club last year, Sporting KC sent four players on-loan during the 2013 USL Pro season, and it paid big dividends for the Lions and players as well. 

Initially, Sporting sent forward Dom Dwyer, midfielder Christian Duke, defender Yann Songo’o and goalkeeper Jon Kempin to Orlando City last year, though Dwyer’s well-form was convincing to earn him a call-up to Kansas City during the middle of the USL Pro season. 

Kevin Ellis, CJ Sapong were the two other Sporting KC loanees that joined the Lions during the latter part of the USL Pro season, mainly because of Dwyer’s return to Kansas City and Songo’o’s release from the club. 

With Sporting KC also affiliating themselves with incoming USL Pro club Oklahoma City Energy, Vermes will have to divide the four players, meaning the Lions and Energy will each receive two players on loan for the upcoming season.

Report: Orlando City to sign U.S. national team U-18 defender to MLS contract

Orlando City SC’s fourth Major League Soccer signing maybe coming sooner than expected. 

According to a report from the Orlando Sentinel, the Lions are bound to sign United States national team U-18 defender Tyler Turner to a professional contract, which will include a spot in Orlando’s MLS squad in 2015. 

Orlando City has yet to comment on the report. 

Turner, 18, is currently playing with Orlando as a trialist during the Disney Pro Soccer Classic, and played on Wednesday night’s match vs. the Columbus Crew. 

If Turner does sign with the Lions, he joins midfielders Darwin Ceren, Kevin Molino and Yordany Alvarez as Orlando’s MLS signees for 2015.

Lions and Crew battle in score-fest draw

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Orlando City SC and the Columbus Crew played to a 4-4 draw on Wednesday night in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic, in what was a back-and-forth game from start to finish. 

Dennis Chin scored his first goal of the preseason in the 88th minute, giving Orlando City what looked like the game-winning goal, but Columbus’ Ethan Finlay came and scored the game-tying goal in the 90th minute.

“I was overdue,” said Chin about his goal. “Preseason's all about getting sharp and just trying to get as many as your chances in as possible. It’s good to get my first one in, hopefully it’s more.”

Both teams scored a combined five goals during the final 14 minutes of the game, including one from newly re-signed midfielder Adama Mbengue.

All-in-all, OCSC got three goals from three different midfielders, showing that the chemistry is starting to improve in the middle.

“We’re starting to get some chemistry within the group,” said Orlando City head coach Adrian Heath. “The combination play within the mid-third of the field is becoming very, very good.

“We’re still growing and trying to put this next group of players together, there’s six or seven news players and everybody’s still not completely on the same page with their roles and responsibilities.”

Darwin Ceren was one of the Lions’ midfielders to put the ball in the back of the net on Wednesday, giving him his first goal for the Purple Kits. 

The preseason is still young for Orlando City, as this was only their fourth game all year. The Lions will return to Disney on Saturday to face the New York Red Bulls for the third place spot in the preseason tournament on Saturday, kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. 

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do , we know that, still got a lot of stuff to nail down,” said Heath. “There’s certain things that please me and there’s stuff that doesn’t, but that’s what preseason's about.”

With less than a month away for Orlando City SC's season opener at Charleston, head coach Adrian Heath indicated that more additions to the roster will be made in the coming weeks. 

The OSJ will continue to be on the latest track of new players that will be sporting the purple kit. 

Although midfielder Adama Mbengue isn't listed in Orlando City's website as a member of the team, a team source told the OSJ that he will rejoin the squad this week, adding more depth to Heath's midfield, and making a stronger argument in having once again a possessive style team.

Heath looking to add former MLS players to 2014 squad

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — If you have followed Orlando City SC’s run in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic, then you may have noticed how their roster stacks up against the other squads playing in the preseason tournament. 

Not physically, but in size of depth. 

“We’re going to wait and see which players maybe drop out of the MLS over the next few weeks, and they gotta be roster compliant, so we’ll see where we are,” OCSC head coach Adrian Heath told reporters after Saturday’s 1-1 draw vs. Toronto FC. “We are a little bit thin, we gotta bring one or two players in.”

The Lions active roster for Saturday’s preseason tournament featured 12 players, four of which were on trial; Mason Trafford, Mark Howard and Jordan Cyrus

Although defender Bryan Burke was present, he was missing on the game day roster, mostly because he’s still trying to get on form from a broken leg he suffered last season. While Adama Mbengue will report to training on Monday. 

While Heath’s pursuit for more former MLS players continues, he has told the OSJ most recently that he plans to continue on bringing players up to the pro team from the academy. 

With the 2014 USL Pro regular season bound to kick off in less than a month, Heath hinted that more signings are on its way, which also include the arrival of two players on-loan from Sporting Kansas City (per USL Pro-MLS affiliation). 

Heath: We got a big MLS signing coming this week

ORLANDO, Fla. — Preseason camp kicks off on Monday, and it looks like more players are expected to join the team according to Orlando City SC head coach Adrian Heath. 

The former Everton man told the reporters that a third Major League Soccer signing is expected this week, hinting the Orlando-bound player is a captain of his national team in South America. 

“We got a big signing this week. We got an international player signing, he’s the captain of his national team in South America, we’re really excited about him coming in,” Heath told reporters. “Probably in the middle of the week, along with two other players signing.” 

The contract is expected to be a multi-year deal, which will run from the upcoming USL Pro season to the end of Orlando’s inaugural MLS campaign in 2015. 

The Lions currently have two players with MLS contracts, Kevin Molino and Yordany Alvarez will take part of Orlando’s MLS journey after they agreed to join the club for the final USL Pro before making the jump with Heath, who will head the Lions in 2015. 

While no new reports on Kaka joining OCSC have erupted, Heath did tell the OSJ that a Designated Player for 2015 is still in the top of their agenda.
